The man who attempted to rescue two boys last week after they were swept underwater in a strong undertow off Grand Isle has died.

33-year-old Terrell Miller was pronounced dead on Sunday at West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero from complications associated with drowning.

As you may recall, the two boys, 8 and 9-year-old brothers, identified as Dalvin and Davon Richardson of Houma, were pulled underwater Friday while swimming in the Gulf with their 12-year-old cousin. They were swept away by a strong riptide.

Miller, the fiance of the boys' mother, attempted to rescue the boys, but had to be pulled out of the water himself and was hospitalized in critical condition.

Grand Isle Police Chief Laine Landry said that it was Davon Richardson's birthday the day of the tragedy.

Those undertow currents just took their feet out from under them and pulled them out," said Landry.

Fortunately, the 12-year-old is expected to make a full recovery.

This tragedy happened at the same spot where another person drowned a week prior.
