It's an incredibly unusual coincidence that has people taking notice, especially with the news of Parton's death still very fresh.

The Next Tropical Storm Could Be Called Dolly

The name Dolly isn't being chosen because of the legendary singer, it's just a coincidence, and a pretty interesting one.

In fact, the name has been sitting on the Atlantic hurricane naming list for years.

The World Meteorological Organization keeps predetermined lists of names for Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes. The names are assigned in alphabetical order as storms reach tropical-storm strength, meaning they have sustained winds of at least 39 mph.

The 2026 Atlantic list started with Arthur, followed by Bertha and Cristobal.

That makes Dolly the next name in line.

So if the tropical system currently being watched in the Atlantic develops enough to become a named storm, forecasters would call it Tropical Storm Dolly.

The Storm Wasn't Named After Dolly Parton

The timing may seem eerie, but there is absolutely no connection between Dolly Parton's passing and the hurricane name.

Hurricane and tropical storm names are selected well in advance. The lists are arranged ahead of time and generally rotate on a six-year cycle. That means "Dolly" was already on the 2026 list long before anyone knew it would potentially be used just after the singer's death.

It's simply one of those bizarre coincidences that makes you stop and say, "What are the odds?"

A Tropical System Is Being Watched

Currently there is a tropical wave in the Atlantic Ocean that is being watched closely, and as of now has a 70% chance of development.

The wave, far out in the Atlantic, could be named by Aug. 27, but the name "Dolly" was chosen 30 years ago and is not related to Dolly Parton's death on Aug. 25. The wave has a 70% chance of becoming a tropical storm or depression, according to the hurricane center, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The possibility of seeing the name "Dolly" attached to a tropical system immediately after Dolly Parton's death is certainly unusual.

The Dolly Coincidence Is Getting Attention

Dolly Parton was known around the world as a singer, songwriter, actress, philanthropist and businesswoman. Her death at age 80 has sparked an enormous outpouring of memories from fans and fellow entertainers.

Now, completely unrelated to her life or career, the name Dolly could soon appear on weather maps across the Atlantic.

It's one of those strange and rare moments where pop culture and Mother Nature happen to collide.
