Countless thousands of Acadiana residents have had their nighttime sleep interrupted for the past several days by either the rumble of thunder from outside their windows or by the sound of a storm alert message being broadcast over their phone. It is the time of year when South Louisiana's weather can get a bit rowdy and the past few days have illustrated that point quite nicely.

The bad news is that we still have another day or two of heavy rain to deal with. The good news is that the severe weather threat for the area has decreased and if you sneak a peek at the long-range forecast you'll see sunshine and lots of it on the horizon.

So, how much rain should we anticipate for today?

That graphic provided by the National Weather Service Office in Lake Charles suggests that another one to two inches of additional rainfall can't be ruled out between now and early Friday morning. Rainfall totals in that range wouldn't normally be a huge consideration.  But the fact that so much rain has already fallen, the additional accumulation could create more high water problems for residents of low-lying areas.

Flash Flood Watches have been posted for almost all of South Louisiana and some Flood Warnings are still in effect as well. We do anticipate some of those warnings staying around for at least a few more days as swollen rivers, creeks, bayous, and coulees return to their banks.

But before that happens we will have more rain today and a pretty good chance of more showers during the day on Friday. Friday night is when rain chances finally start to decrease and we should see some sunshine, although it will be quite windy, on Saturday.

Unfortunately, after all of this rain, we might start to notice another springtime tradition in South Louisiana, the return of the mosquito. If you have to be out early in the morning or at dusk, you might want to consider some of these options to help you fight the bite.
