Shaking Out the Good Stuff – Cajun Area Agency on Aging

This week the Morton Salt/Weeks Island Shaking Out the Good Stuff spotlight falls on the Cajun Area Agency on Aging. As you might imagine, their mission is to provide services, information, and assistance for the older citizens in our community. The Cajun Area Agency on Aging website states they "are committed to assisting persons 60 and older in leading independent lives in their own homes and communities as long as possible.

Providing care and services for an aging population is going to become even more important as the "Baby Boomer" generation moves into retirement age. That means more and more families in South Louisiana will be having to make choices and arrangements to assist those family members as they grow older.

Fortunately, if you find yourself needing assistance with an older family member or perhaps you are the older person in question, there is the Cajun Area Agency on Aging. This organization provides a variety of essential services for those who might need assistance.

Through the Cajun Area Agency on Aging an older resident can arrange to have congregate meals. These meals are nutritionally balanced and served in a community setting. So, the client receiving the services not only has a good meal but they have companionship and company to feed their minds and fulfill the need for being with others. The agency also provides home-delivered meals for those who are unable to leave their homes.

The agency is also an advocate for elder rights and can provide legal advice and assistance for those who need it. The group can also act as an ombudsman to ensure that residents of long-term care facilities are getting the proper care they need and that their rights are protected.

The agency also promotes good health through recreational and wellness programs for older residents as well. They can also provide transportation to senior centers, medical appointments, and social service agencies too. And staffers and volunteers will also reach out to residents via telephone or arrange an in-person visit to promote social interaction and mental well-being.

The agency provides services for those in Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary, and Vermilion Parishes. And their programs, outreach, and personal passion for caring for our most cherished members of society have proven to be some of the "good stuff" in Acadiana.
