It rolled off the African continent as a vigorous tropical wave early this week and most forecasters believed it was only a matter of time before the system would earn a name. That time has come. Late yesterday the National Hurricane Center announced that Tropical Storm Ida had formed.

With the formation of Ida that is now the 9th named storm of the 2015 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Forecasters had predicted a quiet season and so far they have been fairly accurate in their assessment of how the season would go. The mid-season update suggested that we would see eight named storms, so the season is just a little bit more active than that but still below the annual average of twelve named storms.

Forecasters will continue to monitor Tropical Storm Ida as it moves on a west northwesterly track. The basic consensus of the tropical models is that the system will not pose a threat to any landmass during its lifespan.

Elsewhere in the tropics Tropical Depression Nine continues show signs of dissipating over the mid-Atlantic. There is also an area of disturbed weather just off the Carolina coast that is expected to move out to sea as well.
