(KMDL-FM) Attention, Walmart shoppers: the chicken nuggets you purchased for your kids and family could be the subject of swift consumer action. The United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety Inspection Service says the product, sold nationwide at Walmart stores, could be contaminated.

The good news in this food safety notice is that the affected products are no longer on store shelves at Walmart. The bigger concern is that parents and caregivers may have purchased the affected products before the contamination concerns were raised.

Children's Chicken Nuggets Could Be Contaminated with Lead

The overarching concern for the public health alert from FSIS was the possibility of lead contamination in the product. Health studies through the years have found that excessive amounts of lead in a human's diet can lead to catastrophic damage and failure of almost every organ system in the body.

The amount of lead found in these nuggets could be as much as five times higher than the Interim Reference Level for children. Health experts also say these nuggets may be a risk for women who are pregnant or who could become pregnant.
