Fireworks Safety Tips
As we are approaching the 4th of July holiday, we can expect lots and lots of fireworks to celebrate America's Independence. It's part of what makes this American holiday so much fun. And also dangerous. The folks at The National Council on Fireworks Safety has a few tips to keep us safe this holiday, if you plan on busting out the roman candles and firecrackers.
- Obey all state and local laws regarding fireworks
- Read all cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting the fireworks
- Never give fireworks to a child, and make sure an adult is present at all times
- Save your alcoholic drinking for after the show, alcohol and fireworks never mix
- Wear safety glasses when shooting off fireworks
- Light one firework at a time, and then move away
- Only use fireworks outdoors, away from buildings and vehicles
- Never relight a 'dud', and always wait at least 2o minutes before approaching it. Then put in a bucket of water
- Always have a bucket of water and a hose nearby
- Never carry fireworks in your pocket, or shoot them into metal or glass containers
- Never experiment with homemade fireworks
- Dispose of used fireworks by wetting them down and placing them in a metal trash can
- Remember, it is illegal to transport fireworks in baggage or carry on items if you are flying
- Report any illegal fireworks to your local police
- Don't forget pet safety for your furry friends, who might be scared of the fireworks
