South Louisiana Forecast Could Include Snow and Sleet Sunday

Residents of South Louisiana are waking up this morning to rather chilly conditions across the area. Temperatures across much of the I-10 corridor are in the middle to the low 40-degree range as we write this. However, forecasters with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles are telling us that there is colder weather coming.

Not only can we expect an injection of cold Arctic air late this weekend but those colder temperatures could be accompanied by precipitation. What form that precipitation will take is what has people from Lake Charles to Baton Rouge buzzing about the possibility of snow or sleet.

Personally, I wouldn't hold my breath or even waste my time standing outside in the cold to find out if it's snowing or not because temperatures in the area are not expected to drop below freezing even after the onset of additional Arctic air.

Today skies across the region will gradually clear. The clear skies tonight will allow temperatures to approach the freezing mark. On Sunday an Arctic front is expected to push through the region, which will bring a good chance of rain, cold temperatures, and some gusty winds.

However, forecasters with the National Weather Service are not predicting any wintry precipitation for the I-10 corridor. Now, we can't rule out a few snow flurries or sleet pellets but the temperatures will not be cold enough for any accumulation.

If you want to see snow you'll have to head north. The forecast for the Alexandria area does include snow, with no accumulation. Along the I-20 corridor in north Louisiana accumulations of just over an inch of snow are forecast for late Sunday into early Monday.

Remember, it will be cold enough for you to protect your outside plants from frost and cold temperatures. I don't think it will be "pipe busting cold" for residents of South Louisiana but you might as well go ahead and double-check those exposed pipes now just in case.
